 As America's population grows, the West – with its dramatic landscapes and desirable lifestyle – will absorb a large share of this expansion. Even with encouraged infill and redevelopment of existing land areas, development at the urban edge will continue to dominate future growth.
This comprehensive case study explores some of the best urban-edge development practices in western master-planned communities, such as:
- Integrated, accessible and continuous natural space;
- Mixed public, commercial and residential uses;
- Pedestrian walkways and other mobility options; and
- A range of varied home options and prices.
Prepared in partnership with the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and the City of Tucson, this report was created to guide the planning of the Houghton Area Master Plan (HAMP) – a large land area to the southeast of Tucson, Arizona. The findings can inform land-use planning in cities throughout the West to improve their long-range economic vitality and livability.
